Hint: Austro-Hungarian heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo was assassinated by a Bosnian Serb Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip. This act of assassination led to the July Crisis. In response, Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia's reply failed to satisfy the Austrians, thus they set off to war.

Complete step by step answer:
The First World War (often abbreviated as WWI or WW1) was a global war. It originated in Europe and lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. This war is also known as the Great War or "the war to end all wars”. It was fought in Europe by two sections, known as triple entente and triple alliance. This war was sparked with the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and Serbia was blamed for this assassination. On 28 July 1914, Austria sent a declaration of war to Serbia, and hence the first world war started.
By July 1914, the great powers of Europe were divided into two coalitions: The Triple Entente, comprising France, Russia, and Britain, and the Triple Alliance consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Alliance was only defensive in nature, as a result, Italy stayed out of the war until April 1915. Later when it joined the Allied Powers, its relations with Austria-Hungary deteriorated. This war came to an end four years later, on 11 June 1918.

Note: This war caused the mobilization of more than 70 million militaries, including 60 million Europeans. Therefore, it is one of the largest wars in history. In world history, it is also one of the deadliest wars. About 9 million combatants and 13 million civilians died as a direct result of this war. The genocides and the Spanish flu pandemic in the year 1918 caused another 17–100 million deaths worldwide.
