Winnowing is termed as the process of separating the grains. There are various factors to have some eyes about before the harvesting of crops. The crops require close observation to make sure that harvesting isn't premature. This leads in shedding of seeds and loss of crop. If the crops are more than enough ripened, they'll lose their value within the market or may even be non-Consumable.

Harvesting in India is usually performed manually. Sickles may be termed to as a tool that is needed to cut the crop. This method may require a large amount of labour and time-consuming and only suitable for small-sized farms. On larger farms, a harvester is usually required which mixes harvesting with threshing and winnowing.

A safe place should be required which is needed to store the cultivated grains to avoid product loss. Chances of grain loss are much higher and larger during this point than before cultivation. Therefore, the methods of protection are needed to be better and best. Common pests and rodents and a few environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature are the major factors for the loss. Certain precautions are needed to stop this loss.
Before storing the grains, it should be cleaned and dried completely in sunlight due to the reason that it plays a major role in protecting the crops from fungal growth, which is caused by the presence of moisture.
Pests could even be killed and destroyed by a way called fumigation.

Note: Grains are stored and preserved in large granaries or godowns and are needed for marketing. The crops that are preserved and stored are protected from pests, climatic conditions by proper drying, cleaning and fumigation, so that they can be preserved for longer durations.
