The final product obtained by the process of decomposition, with the help of some species of worms, like earthworms, white worms, and red worms. In the process a mixture of food waste, decomposing vegetables is created, that forms a vermicast. This process is known as vermicasting. The rearing of the worms for the above purpose is known as vermiculture.

Vermicompost is an excellent soil conditioner, organic fertilizer, and is water soluble. This procedure could also be used for the treatment of sewage.

The most often used earthworm species is of Eisenia fetida, Eisenia Andrei, Eisenia hortensis, Lumbricus rubellus. Most of these aforesaid species have the ability to breed quickly, and have best appetites. The large scale vermicomposting is done in United States, Philippines, Malaysia, India, Japan, Italy, and Canada. The waste used in large scale vermicomposting is cafeteria, food processing, agricultural, cotton mill, brewer, sewage sludge, and cow dung waste.

Note: The worm castings are used as organic fertilizers, as the earthworms uniformly mixes and grinds the soil particles that the plants could readily absorb. Drilosphere is the portion of soil that goes through the digestive canal of the earthworm. Vermicomposting could be done at homes by using the following wastes; vegetables, eggshells, grains, newspapers, paper towels, leaves, tea bags, grass, etc.
