Coleorhiza is known as the first part of the plant to grow out of seed.
When the process of germination takes place, coleorhiza initially grows through cell elongation but then pierce through the root and remains around the base of the root like a collar.
Coleorhiza helps in protecting the radicle in some plants that are penetrated by the root in germination. It is a solid structure and it doesn’t protect the radicle during its passage from the soil and it stops growing after its emergence from grain and it remains in the soil and doesn't come out of it, it remains as a non green part. It is found in monocotyledons seeds.
Coleoptiles are cylindrical organs of the plant they cover the growing shoot and first leaf and protect them when they pass through the soil. When the shoot is emerging the first leaf breaks through the coleoptile tip. It grows much beyond the grain. Coleoptiles after emergence from soil become green and do the process of photosynthesis.
