Hint: SBR is a synthetic rubber having monomers as styrene and butadiene. There are different synthetic plastics and rubbers are like PAN (Polyacrylonitrile), PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) etc.
Complete step by step answer:
We will start with the full form of the SBR, what actually SBR stands for:
SBR stands for styrene butadiene rubber.
Styrene butadiene Rubber tells about the family of all the synthetic rubbers made from the styrene and butadiene.
Application of Styrene butadiene Rubber:
There are various uses of the Styrene butadiene Rubber:
(i) This is a synthetic rubber which competes with the natural rubber. This was used as a pneumatic tire, shoe heels and soles, gaskets and also in the chewing gums.
(ii) Emulsion of SBR used as coated papers, because of the cheap resins to bind the pigmented coatings.
(iii) SBR is used as a heat exchanger, gasketed-plate heat exchanger.
(iv) SBR is also used in the various building applications, such as binding an alternative to PVA, but the cost is higher, in return it gives better durability, increased flexibility, reduced shrinkage and is also resistant to emulsification in damp conditions.
(v) SBR is also used as a cement based basement waterproofing system. In that, it is mixed with water to make the tanking material slurry.
Note:
SBR initially known as Buna-S, where Bu is for Butadiene, Na for sodium and S for styrene. Buna-S is a type of addition copolymer. SBR consists of two monomers, the two monomers are styrene and butadiene. These two monomers are polymerized by the two different processes, one is from the solution and another one is from emulsion. The emulsion process is the most preferable one.
