Hint :We have many ways to check the acidic nature and basic nature of a substance or any chemical substance. One of the ways is a litmus test. It is widely used to detect the acidic and basic nature of the substance and it is a very cheap and efficient method to check acidic and basic character. Its complete information will be discussed below.
Complete Step By Step Answer:
Litmus paper is a type of paper that changes its color when dipped in a solution to measure acidity or basicity. There are mainly two types of litmus paper and they are red and blue. When we put blue litmus paper in an acidic solution it turns red and when we put red litmus paper in a basic solution it turns blue. There is also one more color we can find and that is purple. When we put litmus paper in a neutral solution it turns purple. When we put red litmus paper in an acidic solution then it remains unchanged due to its acidic character and it is the same for blue litmus paper also.
Note :
A water-soluble mixture of different dyes which are extracted from lichens is known as litmus. We can also use this litmus paper test to detect the acidity or basicity of water soluble gases. When we dip the litmus paper in a solution containing gas which is dissolved in water, it changes the color of the litmus paper. For example, ammonia gas turns red litmus paper to blue which shows it is basic in nature.
