This reveals that all the collisions in between the molecules will not lead to a chemical reaction. The collisions of molecules with a minimum energy leads to a chemical reaction. The minimum energy content required by the molecule to take part in the chemical reaction is called the threshold energy. And the collisions made by the molecules with threshold energy are considered as the effective collisions which will lead to the product formation. The number of effective collisions taking place in unit volume in unit time is referred to as the collision frequency.

When the temperature is increased the more molecules will acquire the threshold energy and hence the number of effective collisions per second increases and the rate of reaction also increases.
