Hint: Earth’s gravitational field attracts gases that make the Earth’s atmosphere. Atmosphere gives us oxygen to breathe and protects us from the sun's harmful rays called ultraviolet rays. It also helps to retain the Sun’ heat on the Earth.
Complete answer:
The atmosphere is a blanket that covers the planet but in some planets, the atmosphere is absent like in Mercury. Earth also has an atmosphere that makes life on Earth possible. We all know energy is important to run the world. Earth gets its running force from the Sun's heat. The atmosphere captures the heat reflected by the Earth’s surface. The property of the atmosphere to capture the heat is due to the presence of gases called greenhouse gases. The atmosphere helps to maintain the temperature by capturing the Sun’s heat. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun but not the hottest planet because of the absence of an atmosphere. Due to the absence of atmosphere around Mercury Sun’s heat is not captured. Therefore by capturing heat atmosphere helps in controlling the climate
Note: Atmosphere is divided into different layers on the basis of distance from the Earth. The closest layer to Earth's surface is the troposphere. All the climate changes occur in the troposphere. The height of the troposphere is 8 kilometers to 18 kilometers. After the troposphere, a stratosphere layer of atmosphere is present that extends upto 50 kilometer above the troposphere. The third layer of atmosphere is the mesosphere that extends upto 85 kilometer above the stratosphere. The second last layer is the thermosphere and the last one is the exosphere.
