The property of the atmosphere to capture the heat is due to the presence of gases called greenhouse gases. The atmosphere helps to maintain the temperature by capturing the Sun’s heat. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun but not the hottest planet because of the absence of an atmosphere. Due to the absence of atmosphere around Mercury Sun’s heat is not captured. The height of the troposphere is 8 kilometers to 18 kilometers. After the troposphere, a stratosphere layer of atmosphere is present that extends upto 50 kilometer above the troposphere. The third layer of atmosphere is the mesosphere that extends upto 85 kilometer above the stratosphere. The second last layer is the thermosphere and the last one is the exosphere.
