Hint: Punctuation is the use of spacing, conventional signs, and certain typographical devices that incorporate the understanding and correct reading of written text, whether it is read silently or aloud. It gives the reader a brief release in tension, allowing them to pause for a moment and analyse silently what has been read so far.

Complete answer:
Let us discuss in what ways does punctuation affect a poem.

Punctuation in poetry is exactly as that punctuation in prose, and it serves almost the same purpose as bar lines in music without which the words and notes won’t flow altogether. In other words, punctuation helps in organising your words into discernible verses in the following ways:-
- Encapsulates thoughts and ideas.
- Ensures the presentation of meaning and makes it coherent.
- Signals when and where to pause for a breath (very important).
The fact is that the punctuation marks are thrown to affect the reader’s pace, understanding, eye movement and perception.

Following are some common punctuations used in poetry:-
Period (.) - Life is not a joke. Those who live know
Question Mark (?) - Is life a joke?
Exclamation mark (!) - Life is not a joke!
Comma (,) - Life is not a joke, rather a blessing.
Semicolon (;) - life is a slaver; it has no pity.
Colon (:) - life is a script:- we are born we rehearse..
Dash (-) - Life is not a joke- though the living sometimes laughs..
Parentheses (()) - Life is not a joke, (though it makes us laugh sometimes).
Ellipses (…) - Stole my heart, stole my soul.

Note: Interestingly, many poets don’t even know the use of punctuation marks ; others just write their verses without using any marks at all, not deliberately, just because they do not know how and where to use them. Some poets place punctuation arbitrarily, without realising the fact that punctuation actually aids the readers’ interpretation and also determines their breath pauses.
