Hint: Mathura oil refinery poses a serious problem to the Taj Mahal. Mathura oil refinery releases some poisonous gases like the oxides of some materials that cause acid rain which results in the yellowish colour of the white marbles of the Taj Mahal.
Step by step answer:The Mathura oil refinery is located at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. It is a refinery of Indian Oil which procedures low and high Sulphur crudes and rudiments. This oil refinery is located at a distance of 50km away from the Taj Mahal that is present at Agra in Delhi. This oil refinery releases some toxic gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide which present in the air as a high level of suspended particulate matter. This sulphur dioxide reacts with water that is present in the air as a vapor to form sulphuric acid. This sulphuric acid formed in the atmosphere mixes with the cloud and reaches the surface of the Earth’s surface as acid rain.
In this same mechanism, nitric oxide also forms by the reaction of nitrogen dioxide and the vapor of water. These acids are posing a great threat to the Taj Mahal. The acids react with the calcium carbonate that is present in the marble and leaves a yellowish patch on it and destroys the quality of the marble.
Note: Acid rain or acid deposition can be described as the precipitation of rain with acidic components, such as sulfuric acid or nitric acid. When this acidic rain water falls on the ground of the earth it affects nature as well as the marbles of statues and skin of humans and other animals. So, in short, we can say Mathura oil refinery toxic gases like oxides of Sulphur after oil refining. This oxide of Sulphur reacts with water when rainfall occurs and forms sulphuric acid.
