Mitochondria produces adenosine triphosphate during the glucose metabolism oxidative phosphorylation which is a complex reaction that occurs in the mitochondrial inner membrane. Mitochondria is a membrane-bound organelle that helps in the generation of the chemical energy which is needed by the cell to run the biochemical reactions in the body. The membranes of mitochondria function in producing energy which goes through different pathways and gets converted. The energy which is produced by mitochondria is stored in a molecule which is known as adenosine triphosphate. The oxidation of glucose that is produced in the cytosol including pyruvate and NADH takes place and the respiration is known as aerobic respiration which depends on the presence of oxygen that provides the most of the energy which is released and oxygen is limited to the glycolytic products which are metabolism by the in aerobic fermentation which is independent of the mitochondria.
Mitochondria help in signalling the reactive oxygen species and regulates the potential of the membrane. It performs apoptosis and programming of cell death. The calcium signalling takes place in mitochondria which include the calcium that evokes apoptosis and regulates cellular metabolism. It helps in the synthesis of steroid and hormonal signalling as the mitochondria are sensitive to hormones and take place in the action of oestrogen receptors which are found in various tissues and cell types that includes the heart and brain.
