Hint: This movement was led by the famous Ali brothers, to restore the Caliph of the Ottomon Empire. And note that the movement collapsed in late 1922.
Complete solution: Before we talk about the culmination of the Khilafat movement, let us have a look at its brief background and history.
Spanning over almost nine years from 1915 to 1924, the Khilafat movement was a pan Islamist movement, here, the muslims of British India and the Indian National congress were allies. The varied treaties of British rendered the compromise of the Caliph in Turkey. It was initially an anti Coloniser reaction, but soon the entire focus shifted on regaining the throne of the Caliph.
Gandhi combined the Non cooperation movement along with this for greater impact and therefore the Khilafat movement set a benchmark for HIndu Muslim.
Eventually, as we know ,the Khilafat movement weakened because of a simple reason: Muslims were divided between working for the Congress, the Khilafat cause and therefore the Muslim League. But along with that, the unfortunate tragedy of Chauri Chaura called out for an immediate suspension of both, non cooperation movement and the khilafat movement by Gandhi, as he was a staunch supporter of peace and non violence. Gradually, the prime cause of the movement, The Turkish empire, declared itself as a republic.
Note: This movement collapsed due to the reasons listed above and it does not infer that the goals of the movement were accomplished, the leaders yet had to go a long way.
