Complete answer: After the end of World War I and the October Revolution in Russia, the Chinese Communist Party was founded by Chinese radical intellectuals and Sun Yat followers founded the Chinese Nationalist Party. The Communists started with Communist teachings brought by Chinese who travelled to France and elsewhere as an Urban Movement in China. The Communists of the Nationalist Party were purged by Chiang Kei Shek in 1927. They killed or forced the Communists from their urban bases. In remote Jiangxi, Mao Tse Tung launched a rural base The "Long March" that ended Northern China has begun. The Jiangxi base has been destroyed and most of the remaining Communists have been hunted down.
In 1937, in Yan'an in Northern China, Mao re-established his leadership and united several wandering Communist armies. Few of the original group remained, but they were far more experienced and determined. As the Nationalists waited and took little action, they were able to restore contact with the Soviets and fight the Japanese.
