Mahatma Gandhi belonged to a simple Gujarati Bania family. Therefore, he usually wore a shirt with a combination of dhoti or pyjama during his childhood.
When he went to London for his study of law, he cut off the tuft on his head and hence further dressed in a western suit. As a lawyer in South Africa during the year 1890s, he still wore western clothes.
On his return to India, he continued to wear western suits. In 1913, he completely discarded western suits and started to wear lungi and kurta. In 1921, he adopted the short dhoti regularly. On 22nd September 1921, he announced that he would content himself with a loincloth, and a chaddar sometimes if needed for the protection of the body.

From the elaborate Gujarati attire, Gandhiji decided on the simple dhoti and shawl. His epoch-making decision was taken by him in Madurai. Then he decided that he has to work for and with the poor people of India. And also he decided to identify with them if he wears different clothes from them.
