The pamphlet written by Thomas Paine argued in favor of the American Independence. It was written like a sermon. He envisioned radical democracy and was decisive in swaying the Colonists from reconciliation to rebellion.
It played a remarkable role in uniting average citizens and political leaders to stir the American Revolution while most colonists considered themselves to be aggrieved Britons.
Patriots wanted to free the thirteen colonies in order to create the United States of America. They wanted to break away from the British rule because they didn’t think they were treated well or equally by colonizers. Famous patriots include Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and George Washington. Paine encouraged them to fight for an egalitarian government. He argued that, ‘Europe, and not England, is the parent country of America.’
He rejected British heritage, severely condemned monarchy, wanted a democracy and ultimately, desired to enlighten the world.
While his ideas inspired the Patriots, the Loyalists were very horrified by his pamphlet. Nevertheless, it did pave the way for the American Civil War.

Note:Common sense had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history and it was even published in 2006 as the all time best-selling title. Paine later moved to France. He contributed immensely to the French Revolution as well. There, he was arrested for his political opinions until he came back to the US in 1802.
