The term ‘timber' refers to the processed wood which is a stage in the wood production process. Any wood which has the capability of yielding a minimum dimensional size can be termed as timber.

-Timber is a naturally renewable resource which is non-toxic and is available broadly around the world. This reduces transportation cost.
-Timber has a faster growth rate due to which its regrowth and replenishment process is faster.
- It is safe to handle and easy to harvest and does not require more energy.
-Softwood timber is not expensive which makes it suitable for wide applications, that is, for building and construction purposes.
-Timber has good thermal insulating properties.
-The construction using timber is simpler and faster as compared to concrete.
-It is durable, long-lasting and easy to maintain.

There are around 12 types of timber. Timber can be hardwood or softwood depending on the type of tree they are derived from. Softwood variety comes from deciduous trees whereas hardwood variety comes from evergreen trees

Note: Timber is a valuable natural resource which serves directly as a construction material, paper manufacturing material, wood speciality products such as furniture. Low-grade timber is used for the creation of wooden boxes and storage material.
