Threatened species: Threatened species are any species of fungi, plants, or animals that are vulnerable to become endangered species in the near future. The International Union of Conservation of Nature IUCN is the organization that decides whether a species is threatened or not. Examples include the Black-footed ferret, the Tawny nurse shark.

Extinct species: A species is said to be extinct when there is the termination of a kind of organism or group of kinds known as species. Such termination is considered when the last individual of the species is dead. Examples include Sabre-toothed cat, Dodo, Steller's sea cow, Wooly mammoth, Tasmanian tiger, Passenger pigeon, West African black rhinoceros.
