Hint:- In plants, ground tissues are present which are neither dermal nor vascular and are categorized into three types of simple tissues based upon the nature of their cell wall, which are parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.
Complete Answer:-
Collenchyma tissue is made up of elongated cells with walls having an irregular thickness. In dicotyledonous plants, it is present below the layer of the epidermis forming a hypodermis layer. It can be present as a homogenous layer or in patches. These cells have an oblique; somewhat circular wall with tapering ends. The corners of the cells are thickened due to the deposition of hemicelluloses and pectin. The intercellular spaces are absent in them. They provide structural and mechanical support especially to the growing regions such as shoots and leaves. Collenchyma helps in the manufacturing of sugar. They also store the sugar in the form of starch and are known to assimilate food when the chloroplast is present.
Additional information: There are four types of collenchyma tissues based upon the thickness of their cell wall and the arrangement of the cells. These are angular collenchyma, tangential collenchyma, annular collenchyma, and lacunar collenchyma. Angular collenchyma is thickened at the intercellular points. Tangential collenchyma is thickened at the tangential faces of the wall and the cells are organized as rows in a definite order. Annular collenchyma has uniformly thickened walls. Lacunar collenchyma is the only collenchyma with intercellular spaces.
So, the correct option is (A) Sugar.
Note:- Collenchyma cells have various shapes including oval, spherical, and polygonal. They sometimes contain chloroplast also. They are mostly living cells. The thickness of their wall depends upon the stress on the plant body.
