Everything that is around us and the presence of which can be felt with the help of any of our five senses, i.e., sight, touch, smell, hearing, and taste is called a matter. Matter and energy are the two things from which the whole universe is made up. A few examples of matter are sofa, spoon, milk, gold, plastic, etc. So, some of the conditions for something to be matter are:
-The matter must occupy space.
-They must possess mass.
-Our senses must be able to recognize them.
-There are two parts of matter, these are:
Physical classification: the matter is classified into the following, based on the physical state under the ordinary condition:
(a)- solids
(b)- liquids
(c)- gases
-A substance is said to be solid if it has a definite volume and definite shape, and the molecules are very close to each other.
-A substance is said to be liquid if it has a definite volume but no definite volume and the molecules are not so close to each other.
-A substance is said to be gas if it neither has a definite volume nor a definite shape, and the molecules are far from each other.
-Chemical classification: According to it, all kinds of matter are classified into two types:
a)- Homogeneous
b)- Heterogeneous
-If a material has uniform composition and identical properties throughout then it is a homogeneous mixture. On the other hand, if a material consists of several phases, then it is a heterogeneous mixture.

Note: We have seen that there are 3 types of states of matter i.e., solid, liquid, and gases. In recent discoveries, the fourth state of matter has been seen. It is called plasma. It has properties other than three.
