Step by step answer:
An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom. In case the number of protons in the atom gets changed then the type of the element is changed.
A chemical compound is a chemical substance composed of many identical molecules composed of atoms from more than one element held together by chemical bonds. Two atoms of the same element bonded in a molecule do not form a chemical compound, since this would require two different elements.
Mixture: In chemistry, a mixture is a material made up of two or more different substances which are physically combined. A mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances in which the identities are retained and are mixed in the form of solutions, suspensions and colloids.
Therefore let us classify the options on the basis of the above mentioned definitions.
1. Sodium: Element (made up of only one type of atom)
2. Soil: Mixture (composed of small pieces of a variety of material, so it is a heterogeneous mixture)
3. Sugar Solution: Mixture (because sugar can be easily separated from water by crystallisation)
4. Silver: Element (made up of only one type of atom)
5. Calcium carbonate: Compound (made up of atoms of the elements of calcium, carbon and oxygen, held together by chemical bonding)
6. Tin: Element (made up of only one type of atom)
7. Silicon: Element (made up of only one type of atom)
8. Coal: Mixture (heterogeneous mixture of carbon, hydrogen sulphur, volatile impurities and moisture)
9. Air: Mixture (composed of oxygen, nitrogen, water vapour and dust particles)
10. Methane: Compound (made up of atoms of the elements of carbon and hydrogen, held together by chemical bonding)
11. Carbon dioxide: Compound (made up of atoms of the elements of carbon and oxygen, held together by chemical bonding)
12. Sea water: Mixture ( because it has all the salts suspended at the top)
