The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was founded on 6th April 1980. Before the Bharatiya Janata Party, there was the Bharatiya Jana Sangh which was founded by Syama Prasad Mukherjee in 1951. They were in existence from 1951 to 1977. In the year 1977, After the ‘State of Emergency’, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and several other parties merged together to establish the Janata Party.
The Janata Party after being established in 1977, defeated Congress in that year’s general elections. They served the government for only three years and were dissolved in 1980.
