The astronauts would be in the vacuum of space and the spacesuit provides them with oxygen. They also contain water to drink during the spacewalks. They also protect astronauts from being injured from the impacts of small bits of space dust. The space dust may not sound very dangerous, but even if a small tiny object is moving many times faster than a bullet can cause injury. The astronauts are also protected from the radiation in space by the spacesuit. To protect the astronaut’s eyes, the spacesuits even have visors. The astronauts wear a Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment underneath the spacesuit. A backpack called the Primary Life Support Subsystem is also attached to the back of the spacesuit. If an astronaut gets separated from the space station, he or she could use Simplified Aid for Extravehicular Activity Rescue (SAFER) to fly back.
