Hint: While growing crops some unwanted plants also start growing in cultivated fields.

Complete answer:
Weeds are the unwanted plants that grow along with cultivated plants and grow in the cultivated field and compete with crops for food, water and other nutrients. Crops need proper nutrition, water and other natural sources to grow properly. The growth of weeds competes with the crop plants for all the essential requirements including land. They do not let crops take essential nutrition which inhibit the growth of the crop resulting in damaging it. Example: Barley or mustard plants act as weeds in wheat fields and compete for nutrition.

Note: Plants other than crops grown in cultivated fields are called weed and damage the crops by competing with them for natural resources. To increase the crop production the weeds have to be controlled.
