Some studies suggest that there are more ways to form minerals than there are different types of minerals.

The two main ways minerals form are crystallization through lava and solutions. The first category is called the igneous or the magmatic where crystalline rocks are formed through the cooling of molten material present inside the earth. Magma slowly cools down inside the earth and this slow cooling improves the mineral growth to be large enough and can be identified without a microscope.

The second category through which mineral forms is called sedimentary where the resultant product is made of sedimentation or deposits of solid material from a solution in a fluid. As water can only hold a certain amount of minerals dissolved in it, so when the amount is big enough to get dissolved, the particles settle down and form a mineral solid which can be easily precipitated out of water.

Note: There are some more ways through which minerals can be formed such as hydrothermal deposits where the minerals are formed by the precipitation of solids from a hydrothermal solution like water heated through magma, and the other one is metamorphic where the mineral is formed due to altercations in the physical conditions near the mineral such as temperature and pressure.
