Plants and animals are the main source of food for all the organisms on earth. Food obtained from animals is the main source of protein that includes fish, milk, meat, poultry and cheese. Whereas, plants provide us with fruits and vegetables, which are an important source of fibres, proteins and carbohydrates.
Main Commercial methods to obtain food: -
a. Agriculture:- Agriculture is one of the most ancient works in the world. Agriculture occupies 11% which is about 1.5 billion hectares of the earth’s surface and 13.4 billion hectares of the land surface. In agriculture, mostly paddy, wheat, corn, vegetables, are grown.
b. Animal husbandry: - Animal husbandry involves raising cattle on a large scale. Here, animals are raised for meat, skin, internal organs, etc. Meat is used as food, the skin is used for making coats, etc.
c. The other commercial methods include obtaining food by pisciculture, poultry, etc.

Note: Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities. The history of agriculture began thousands of years ago.
