Hint: To understand the difference between the different types of chemistry, we first need to know what chemistry is. The branch of science that deals with matter and the changes happening around through reactions in chemistry.
Complete answer:
Traditionally there are 5 major branches or types of chemistry namely biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and organic chemistry.
Let us understand the different subdisciplines of chemistry one by one.
1. Organic Chemistry
The branch of chemistry that deals with the properties, structures, and the reactions of compounds containing carbon atoms in covalent bonding, i.e., organic compounds in organic chemistry.
The formula and the chemical composition of a compound can be determined by the study of structure.
The behavior of a compound can be determined from the study of properties like physical and chemical properties. The study of chemical reactivity also helps in determining the behavior of organic compounds.
The study of the chemical synthesis of polymers, drugs, and natural products can help us understand organic reactions.
2. Inorganic Chemistry
The branch of science that deals with the behavior of inorganic compounds and organometallic compounds in inorganic chemistry.
The study of chemical compounds that are not carbon-based is included in inorganic chemistry.
The study of inorganic chemistry has various applications in agriculture, fuels, medications, coatings, surfactants, pigments, materials science, and catalysts.
3. Analytical Chemistry
The study and utilization of instruments and methods used to quantify, identify and separate matter are done in the branch of analytical chemistry.
The two types of analysis include qualitative analysis which determines analytes and quantitative analysis that determines concentrations or numerical.
4. Physical Chemistry
The branch of science that deals with macroscopic compounds and particulate phenomena in chemical systems in terms of concepts, practices, and principles of physics like chemical equilibrium, analytical dynamics, statistical mechanics, quantum chemistry, thermodynamics, tome, force, energy, and motion are physical chemistry.
5. Biochemistry
The branch of science that deals with the chemical processes relating to and within the living organism are biological chemistry or biochemistry. It is said to be a branch of both biology and chemistry.
It is mainly divided into three fields:
i. Structural biology
ii. Enzymology
iii. Metabolism
Note:
It should be noted that there is much overlap in the field of inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry, mainly in terms of organometallic compounds.
Also, physical chemistry must not be confused with chemical physics as the former majorly deals with macroscopic science whereas the latter deals with the physicochemical phenomenon.
