Hint- we know that detergents in comparison to soaps do effective cleaning when used in hard water.
Complete step by step answer:
We must remember that the basic difference between soaps and detergents is that soaps are made from natural ingredients, such as natural oils (vegetable, palm, pine, coconut) or proteins extracted from animal fats. Detergents are synthetic artificially manufactured. While soap is limited up to some applications, detergents can be extended to include other ingredients for all kinds of cleaning processes.
The basic difference between soap and detergent is that most cleaning products today are detergents. One of the biggest reasons for this is how soap reacts with water. While detergents don’t leave a residue (free-rinsing), soap needs a clear water wash after application or it will leave a thin surface of residues.
When we use soap to wash clothes, soaps break down the oil drops into the water soluble size of smaller oil drops. And soap molecules have two different types of ends. Therefore, the one end of soaps is hydrophobic (hate water) which attaches with grime and dirt. And the other end of soap is hydrophilic (love water) which is affixed with water molecules. As a result, when we washcloth with soap water, the dirt pulls off the clothes.
This is the structure of soap and we can see the two hydrophobic and hydrophilic ends.
When using a detergent with water, detergent removes dirt and oil from clothing. Water is not allowed to remove oil and dirt from clothing. Detergent cleans by causing chemical reactions with water to force dirt and debris out of clothing. Detergents work with water to loosen the dirt trapped in the clothing material and clean it away.
This is the structure of detergent and we can see the two regions in the structure.
As we know that hard water is an enemy of soap means soap has a hydrophobic property for it and in that condition soap forms scum. Soap scum affects cleaning; it can deteriorate the fabrics and eventually destroy clothing or other surfaces on it. On the other hand, detergents can work in any level of water hardness since they react very less to minerals in hard water.
Soaps work better at warm water. Whereas, detergents can perform well in any temperature of water added in it. This durability of detergents makes them enable use in everything from shampoo to laundry liquids to stain removers.
Note: People believe that soaps are better to use as it is made up from naturally obtained materials, but the truth is both soaps and detergents can provide their impacts to the environment at some degree.
