Intrauterine devices are ideal contraceptive devices for the female who wants to delay pregnancy or who wants a difference in age of children. It is one of the most widely accepted contraceptive methods in India. Although they are useful and effective they may cause side effects and contraindications.
Absolute contraindications for IUD use comprise the following:
1) Pregnancy
2) Significantly distorted uterine anatomy and uterine infection.
3) Unexplained vaginal bleeding concerning pregnancy or pelvic malignancy.
4) Gestational trophoblastic disease with persistently raised beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels.
5) Pelvic infection.
6) Abnormal bleeding.

3) The hormone releasing IUDs such as Progestasert and LNG-20. IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperm and suppress the motility and fertilizing capacity of them. Hormone releasing IUDs makes the uterus incompatible for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms.
