Introduction to Poems about Family

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without your family? Yes, people in families fight, sometimes our siblings are annoying and they tease us, sometimes our parents are strict and do not give us permission for things we ask for and sometimes families can be complicated but a life without family doesn’t sound all that great.

A Happy Family

A Happy Family

Our families are our greatest strength. They stand by us even when the rest of the world turns their back on us. Here’s a poem on family in English for kids by Edgar Guest that celebrates the bonds of family. This is the best poem on family in English for your kids.

The Stick Together Families Poem

The stick-together families are happier by far

then the brothers and the sisters take separate highways.

The gladdest people living are the wholesome folks who make

A circle at the fireside that no power but death can break.

And the finest of conventions ever held beneath the sun

Are the little family gatherings when the busy day is done?

There are rich folk, there are poor folk, who imagine they are wise,

And they’re very quick to shatter all the little family ties.

Each goes searching after pleasure in his own selected way,

Each with strangers likes to wander, and with strangers likes to play.

But it’s bitterness they harvest, and it’s the empty joy they find,

The children that are wisest are the stick-together kind.

There are some who seem to fancy that for gladness they must roam,

That for smiles that are the brightest they must wander far from home.

That the strange friend is the true friend, and they travel far astray

they waste their lives striving for a joy that’s far away,

But the gladdest sort of people, when the busy day is done,

Are the brothers and the sisters who together share their fun

It’s the stick-together family that wins the joys of earth,

That hears the sweetest music and that finds the finest mirth;

It’s the old home roof that shelters all the charm that life can give;

There you find the gladdest playground, there the happiest spot to live.

And, O weary, wandering brother, if contentment you would win,

Come back, you, unto the fireside and be comrade with your kin.

Explanation of the Poem

Stanza 1

“The stick-together families are happier by far…..

The busy day is done.”

This stanza talks about how families that stick together are happier than others. It talks about how siblings that have stuck together instead of going their separate ways are happy. It goes on to talk about how the most content people have bonds so strong with their family that the only thing that can break them apart is death. Lastly, it says that the best meetings held under the sun are family gatherings filled with nostalgia and fun.

Stanza 2

There are rich folk, there are poor folk, who imagine they are wise…

wisest are the stick-together kind.

This one talks of how neither the rich nor the poor are the wisest, instead it is the ones who maintain their family ties. It goes on to say that those with no family ties will go from place to place searching for joy, but will only ever find empty temporary joy. This is because they won’t have their family to share it with.

Stanza 3

There are some who seem to fancy that for gladness they must roam,…

 together share their fun

It talks about how some people believe that they have to travel and live far away from their hometowns and families to truly be happy. These people believe that their friends are the ones that will stay with them no matter what, while they search for some form of joy. The poem goes on to say that the happiest in life are those who after a busy day, have a warm home filled with their family to come back to and enjoy their free time with.

Stanza 4

It’s the stick-together family that wins the joys of earth,…

comrade with your kin.

The last stanza in the poem reiterates the points made in the previous stanzas. It tells the reader that the family that sticks together is the one that truly enjoys the fine as well as the mundane things in life. The poet says that the place that will give a person the most happiness is their childhood home and their playground. The poem ends by telling the reader that once you get tired of wandering the earth in search of happiness, come back home and be with your family and you will find it.
