How to Convert Hours into Minutes (Hrs to Mins)

Do you know that the most powerful and precious thing in this world is time through which we can determine the duration of all events or the precise timing whenever something occurs? Time units act as milestones as well.

Seconds, days, and years are the three major time units. The use of clocks helps to determine the time of day. A clock has 12 numbers printed on it, ranging from 1 to 12. It has a minute hand and an hour hand. Some clocks include a third hand. It is the quickest moving hand and displays the time in seconds. The time is usually discussed in terms of a 12-hour clock.

In this article, the conversion of hours to minutes is shown in detail. At the end of the article, some problems on how to convert hours into minutes are also discussed.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Convert 4 hours into minutes.

Ans: We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes

Therefore,

$4 \mathrm{hr}=4 \times 60 \mathrm{~min}$

$4 \mathrm{hr}=240 \mathrm{~min}$

Hence, 4 hours is equal to 240 minutes

(Note: We can abbreviate hour and minute with the letter hr and min; i.e., 1 hour as 1 hr and 1 minute as 1 min.)

Example 2: Convert 24 hours in minutes?

Ans: We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes

Therefore,

$24 \mathrm{hr}=24 \times 60 \mathrm{~min}$

$24 \mathrm{hr}=1440 \mathrm{~min}$

Hence, 24 hours in minutes is equal to 1440 minutes or one day.

Example 3: Convert 7 hr 12 min into minutes.

Ans: We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes

Step 1- convert the number of hours into minutes;

$7 \mathrm{hr}=7 \times 60 \mathrm{~min}$

$7 \mathrm{hr}=420 \mathrm{~min}$

So, 7 hr is equal to 420 minutes.

Step 2- Add the given minutes to the result obtained from the previous step;

$420 \text { min }+12 \text { min }=432 \text { minutes }$

Hence 7 hours 12 minutes are equal to 432 minutes.

Example 4: Convert $\dfrac{1}{2}$ hr 7 min into minutes.

Ans: We know that 1 hour =60 minutes

Step 1- convert the number of hours into minutes;

$\dfrac{1}{2} h r=\dfrac{1}{2} \times 60 \mathrm{~min}$

$\dfrac{1}{2} h r=30 \mathrm{~min}$

So, $\dfrac{1}{2}$ hr is equal to 30 minutes.

Step 2- Add the given minutes to the result obtained from the previous step;

$30 \text { min }+7 \text { min }=37 \text { minutes }$

Hence $\dfrac{1}{2}$ hours 7 minutes are equal to 37 minutes.

Example 5: Convert 20 hr 29 min into minutes.

Ans: We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes

Step 1- convert the number of hours into minutes;

$20 \mathrm{hr}=20 \times 60 \mathrm{~min}$

$20 \mathrm{hr}=1200 \mathrm{~min}$

So, 20 hr is equal to 30 minutes.

Step 2- Add the given minutes to the result obtained from the previous step;

$1200 \mathrm{~min}+29 \min =1229 \text { minutes }$

Hence, 20 hours 29 minutes are equal to 1229 minutes.

Practice Problems

Q1. How many minutes are there in $2 \dfrac{1}{2}$ hours?

Ans: 150 min.

Q2. How many minutes are there in a day?

Ans: 1440 min.

FAQs on Conversion of Hours to Minutes

1. What are the conversions of time?

The clock is the device used to evaluate time. In terms of a day, there exist time units that are smaller than a day and time units that are larger than a day. Some important conversions of time are listed below:

  • 1 hour =60 minutes

  • 1 minute =60 seconds

  • 1 hour =60 minutes =3600 seconds

  • 1 day =24 hours

  • 1 week =7 days

  • 1 year =365 days

  • 1 year =12 months

  • 1 leap year=366 days

  • 1 year =52 weeks

2. What are sundials and how do they operate?

A sundial, one of the first tools used to measure time, operates by simulating the movements of the sun. The sun shines on a gnomon, which is a triangle or device arranged perpendicular to a base plate, casting its shadow on the proper hour line, displaying the time of day. If the sundial is to display precise clock time, the angle of the gnomon must be parallel to the Earth's axis and equal to the latitude of its location.

3. What is the significance of measuring time?

By assigning dates to moments, defining event durations, and indicating which events occur before which others, time gives us a way to measure change. To do so, some form of time measurement is required. Time measurement is critical because time can be thought of as a common language between people, allowing everyone to move in an orderly manner in this fast-paced world. The importance of time in maintaining social interactions cannot be overstated.
