Types of Narration 

There are two types of narration for class 7:


Direct Speech

In this type of narrative sentence, the words of the speakers are stated word-word in the quotations. Direct speeches generally have two parts: reporting clause and reported clause. Reporting clause is the verbs that are placed before the quotations (like, said, say, ask, asked, shout, shouted) and the reported clause is the dialogue of the speaker. 


Example: Ron said, “I am going to the playground”. 


Indirect Speech 

In this type of narration, the speaker’s dialogues are transformed into simple statements omitting the word-to-word dialogue and without changing the meaning of the dialogue.


Example: Ron said that he was going to the playground.

In The Case of Tenses: 

  • If the reporting clause is in the present or future tense, then the reporting verb of the indirect speech should be in the present or future tense. 

Example: She says, “I am a dancer”. (Direct speech)

                  She says that she is a dancer. (Indirect speech)

                  She will say, “I shall go”. (Direct speech)

                  She will say that she shall go. (Indirect speech)

  • If the reporting clause is in the past tense in the direct speech, then the indirect speech will change according to the tense of the reported clause of the direct speech,
