Short Summary of Class 4 Chapter 4- The Story of Amrita

This chapter is a true story about a girl named Amrita. She lived in a village called Khejaldi, which is located in Rajasthan, near Jodhpur. The place was named after the trees which grew there. All the locals who lived in the village took care of the trees, animals and plants. The elders in the village used to say to the younger people that plants, animals and human beings are interdependent on one another. This meant that plants and animals would not survive without the people and the people wouldn’t survive without them.

Amrita would wake up early every morning and greet the trees. These trees were her friends. Each day she would choose a special tree, and then she would put her arms around the trunk of the tree and whisper to the tree about how strong and beautiful it was. She would also thank them and ask for their strength. Similarly, the other children had special trees with which they would play for hours. One day, when Amrita went to greet her trees, she saw many strangers in her village. These people had axes with them. They said that it was the king who had sent them to cut the trees for wood for the King’s palace.

Amrita quickly put her arms across the tree and hugged it tightly. The men threatened her, but she was resolute. However, the king's men were adamant to cut down the trees. Amrita and the villagers came together and hugged the trees to protect them. Many villagers died saving the trees. The King was shocked to hear this news. He visited the village, where he learned about the villagers' strong feelings to respect and protect the trees and animals. He then declared that trees or animals would not be harmed in the area. Today, the villagers of that area called Bishnois continue to preserve plants and animals.
