About the Chapter

‘Playing with numbers’ is the second Chapter in the NCERT Math textbooks for Class 6 students. After the first Chapter introduces the Numbers, in this Chapter we learn about Factors and Multiples using practical examples.

  • A Factor is a number that divides the given number without any remainder. For example

6 Divided by 3 leaves 0 as a remainder with 2 being the quotient, which means 3 is a factor of 6.

  • A Multiple of a number is the product of the number and a counting number. So a multiple of 3 would be the product of a counting number and 3 . Below are the first six multiples of 3.

1×3=3 2×3=6 3×3=9 4×3=12 5×3=15 6×3=18

We can find the multiples of any number by continuing this process.

After understanding this, we move forward by doing divisions and multiplications to find factors and multiples in different exercises.

The Chapter, later on, introduces LCM and HCF, and Prime Factorization is taught in further exercises.

After clearing all these concepts and completing all the NCERT Exercises, you can explore RD Sharma's Mathematics for Class 6 to solve some more complex but exciting examples.
