About Class 6 Chapter 1 – Knowing Our Numbers

‘Knowing our numbers’ is the first chapter in NCERT Maths Textbook for Class 6. In order to solve any mathematical equations, knowing the numbers first is very important. In this chapter, students learn about comparing numbers, large numbers in practice, using brackets and roman numerals charts. Students are taught how to read, write, and compare numbers. Students learn about large numbers up to 1 crore. Students also learn about the International system of numeration. Students are also taught the use of commas in numbers in this chapter. 

 

Students learn the use of brackets since the use of brackets allows us to avoid confusion, increase clarity, and signify grouping of numbers where needed. They are also taught how to estimate the nearest place value by rounding off. Students are also taught about Roman Numerals and how to write them and certain rules about them that one should keep in mind while writing.

 

The themes of comparing numbers and large numbers in practice are covered in the first section of the chapter.

  • The number with the most digits is the greater of two numbers.

  • 1000 is the smallest four-digit number.

  • 999 is the largest three-digit number.

  • Ascending order refers to arranging items in ascending order from the smallest to the largest.

  • The term "descending order" refers to the arranging of items in ascending order from the largest to the smallest.
