Hint: The bone consists of a spongy tissue known as bone marrow. They contain the stem cells that have the ability to develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
Complete Answer:
- There are two types of bone marrow, they are red bone marrow and yellow bone marrow. Yellow bone marrow is made up of mesenchymal stem cells that help in storage of fats in the cell. They are called adipocytes.
- The chief function of yellow bone marrow is storage of adipocytes. The triglycerides of adipocytes act as the source of energy. They are present in the shaft of long bones in the medullary cavity and are covered by slayer of red bone marrow. In case of emergency, it produces blood corpuscles.
- Anaemia is a medical condition where there is a deficiency of red blood cells or haemoglobin in blood. Severe cases of bone marrow disease leads to anaemia. In aplastic anemia, the bone marrow fails to make red blood cells.
Note: In the body, the bone marrow fat is different from the subcutaneous fat. The last fat to be lost from the body due to starvation is bone marrow fat.
