Hint: Copper is a metal and it has many properties like softness, malleability, and ductility due to which it can be easily formed into thin sheets and wires. The properties like electrical conductivity and high thermal conductivity make it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Complete answer:
Copper is a chemical element with the symbol Cu and has an atomic number 29. It is not hard metal but it is malleable and can be bent easily if applied force. It can be beaten into sheets because it is ductile. When the surface of the freshly made copper is exposed, it will appear to be pinkish-orange in colour. It is a good conductor of heat and electricity. But it’s conductivity is less than silver.
Uses of copper:
1. Its waterproof quality makes it a favourable material for roofing buildings.
2. Its lightweight makes it easier to use in constructions.
3. It can be used as an alloy material and can be used in the shipbuilding industry.
4. It is used in jewellery making.
5. Mainly used for water purifiers as an active ion infuser to let good quality water to flow out for use.
6. Constantan is used in strain gauges and thermocouples which are used as sensors in the instrumentation industry.
7. It is used to make coins.
8. Copper is also considered antibacterial. It can discourage bacteria from spreading from public houses, brass doorknobs, handrails, etc.
Note: Copper is a biodegradable metal. So, organisms like Chromobacterium violaceum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa help to degrade the copper metal. In eukaryotes, copper is used for aerobic respiration.
