Hint:The life span of a plant begins with seed germination and it continues till the plant bears flowers and fruits in a particular season. The lifespan of a plant is mainly a genetic feature. Various plants take various time periods to complete their life cycle and on this basis, they are divided into three categories.
Complete answer:The three types of plants classified on the basis of their life span:
1. Annuals - Annuals are the plants that complete their one life cycle in a year. These plants germinate, grow, bear fruits, and then die within a year. Normally, all herbs and plants which belong to the grass family display this type of life cycle.
Few examples of annual plants are mustard, watermelon, corn, lettuce wheat.
2. Biennials - Biennials are the plants that complete their one life cycle in two years. These plants germinate, develop a root system, stem and leaves in the first year of their life cycle. In their second year, these plants yield flowers and then bear fruit.
Few examples of biennial plants are cabbage, carrot, and leek.
3. Perennials - Perennials are the plants that complete their one life cycle in more than two years. As soon as they grow, they start bearing flowers, producing fruits, seeds and the cycle lasts for a longer period of time. These plants do not die after bearing fruits but they renew their parts, season after season. All trees along with a few shrubs are classified into perennials.
Few examples of perennial plants are tomatoes, ginger, banana, mango, coconut, palm, banyan, etc.
Additional Information:
The lifespan of a Rice Plant:
The rice plant is a type of grass and it is the staple food for many people all over the world. Rice is an annual crop that has an average lifespan of about 4 to 8 months. It undergoes three important stages before harvesting, namely, vegetative stage, reproductive stage, and ripening stage.
Note:Onion plant is a biennial plant. It germinates and grows its bulb in the first year of its life cycle. They are then harvested. If left on the ground, these plants become dormant during the winters and sprout again during the spring season.
