The brain is our body's central information processing organ and acts as the "command and control system." It governs voluntary movements, body coordination, the working of essential internal organs, thermoregulation, hunger and thirst, various endocrine gland functions, and human behaviour. It is also a place where vision, sight, voice, memory, intellect, feelings and thoughts are processed. The brain is divided into three regions- forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.

The forebrain comprises the hypothalamus, thalamus and cerebrum. The cerebrum is the main component of the human brain. A deep cleft separates the cerebrum lengthwise into two parts, referred to as the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The hemispheres are bound by a nerve fibre structure called corpus callosum. Forebrain plays a crucial function in the processing of information relevant to diverse emotional, voluntary, sensory and associative functions.

The hindbrain is made up of pons, cerebellum and medulla. The midbrain sits between the forebrain thalamus/hypothalamus and the hindbrain pons. The midbrain is connected with the regulation of muscle activity, in particular eye movements, and the processing of auditory and visual information.

Note: The brainstem is the area between the deep structures of the cerebral hemisphere and the cervical spinal cord at the bottom of the brain. The brain stem consists of three major areas, the midbrain, the pons and the medulla oblongata. The links between the brain and the spinal cord are made by the brain stem.
