a. We can differentiate between multimolecular colloids and associated colloids as multimolecular colloids can be formed by dissolving small particles that will form aggregates on dissolution which will have enough size to give a colloid, whereas associated colloids can be formed by dissolving particles that will form aggregates as micelles, only above a specific temperature and concentration. We can take gold sol and sulphur sol as examples of multimolecular colloids and soaps and synthetic detergents as examples of associated colloids.
b. Now, let’s have a look at the two terms, coagulation and peptization.
We can define coagulation as the process by which colloidal particles are settled. We can also understand coagulation as precipitation of the sol. However, we can define peptization as the process by which we can convert a precipitate into a colloidal sol. So, we can say that these two terms are opposite processes.
c. Finally, let’s talk about the last two terms that are homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis.
We can categorize catalysis as homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis based on the phase of the catalysts and that of the reactants. When we use a catalyst that is present in the same phase as our reactants are, we call the process to be homogeneous catalysis. However, if we use a catalyst that is present in the different phase than the phase of our reactants, we call the process to be heterogeneous catalysis.
