Hint:- In ecology, the climax community is a term used for the final terminal community of plants, fungi, and animals that have become stable. It is achieved through the process of ecological succession. It is composed of species that are adapted to the average environmental conditions of the area.
Complete Answer:-
A climax community is said to be a steady-state if a long period is considered. The idea of community was given by Frederic Clements in 1969, but the analysis of succession which leads to a climax was given much before by Henry Cowles in 1899. When the final terminal community of plants and other organisms becomes steady for a very long period of time, it gets into a state of equilibrium with the climate of the environment, and this state is known as the climax community.
The climax community has two special features:
Unitary – A climax is a unit. It means all the species present in it, be it plants, fungi, or other animals are considered as an organized unit. All of them together act as an indicator of the climate of that area.
Stability – The climax community is always stable with respect to its climate and it can never be replaced with any other community through the competition.
Note:- As discussed above, the climax community is a steady-state that remains in a state of equilibrium with the environmental conditions for a long period, but the equilibrium can be broken if any external factor disturbs the equilibrium. Thus, for a community to be stable, it should be protected from any external factor.
