Hint: The industrial strength of a nation largely depends on the amount of sulphuric acid it produces and consumes. Therefore it is rightly called the king of chemicals.
Complete step by step answer:
Usage of sulfuric acid
-Sulphuric acid has a vast variety of applications both in industry as well as in the laboratory. Some important commercial uses of sulphuric acid are:
-In the chemical industry: Sulphuric acid is employed in the manufacture of hundreds of other chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulphates and sulphites, diethyl ether etc.
-The manufacture of explosives: A mixture of sulphuric acid and nitric acid called nitrating mixture is used for the nitration of an organic compound. The nitration process is used for the manufacture of a large number of explosives like dynamite which is a mixture of glyceryl trinitrate and glyceryl dinitrate absorbed over kieselguhr. It is also used for the manufacture of gun cotton (nitrocellulose), T.N.T (2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene), picric acid (2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol), etc.
-It is used as an electrolyte in the lead storage battery.
-It is also used in the laboratory as a drying and dehydrating agent.
-Uses of chlorine are given below :
-It is used for bleaching wood pulp, cotton and textiles.
-It is used for the metallurgy (extraction) of gold and platinum.
-It is used in the manufacture of dyes, drugs and organic compounds such as $CHC{l_3}, CC{l_4}, DDT$ refrigerants such as chlorofluorocarbon, Freon and bleaching powder.
-It is also used for sterilising drinking water.
Note: Some poisonous gases such as phosgene $(COC{l_2})$, tear gas $(CC{l_3}N{O_2})$ and mustard gas $(ClC{H_2}C{H_2}SC{H_2}C{H_2}Cl)$ also prepared by chlorine. Mustard gas was used by Germany in World War 1
