The Indian Independence Act of 1947 is an Act of the parliament of the United Kingdom. It was passed in 1947. It had lasting effects on India. It gave independence to India but with scars. A new country came into existence which is our neighbour in the west.

Following are the two provisions of Indian Independence Act, 1947:

a. The British India was divided into two new independent dominions. India and Pakistan were two new dominions carved out from the British India. This division came into effect from 15 August 1947.

b.The provinces of Bengal and Punjab were divided between two newly formed dominions that were India and Pakistan.

Additional Information
The territories of Pakistan consisted of east Bengal, West Punjab, Sind and Chief Commissioner’s Province of Baluchistan. The province of Bengal which was formed under the Government of India Act, 1935, came to an end. Now, two new provinces were constituted from Bengal. These provinces were East Bengal and West Bengal. East Bengal became part of Pakistan and West Bengal became a part of India.

Two new provinces were carved out of the Punjab province. These provinces were West Punjab and East Punjab.

The Act was given Royal assent on 18 July 1947. It was a landmark towards the Indian independence. But it resulted in the division of the country into two new countries. It was drafted by the Labour government of Clement Attlee.
