Complete answer:
The main reason that led to the formation of the Non-aligned movement was after the Cold war as an organization of States that did need to formally align themselves with either the United States or the Soviet Union but sought to remain independent or neutral. The very first conference took place in 1955 during the discussion that took place at Asia – Africa conference which was held in Indonesia. The very first Non-Alignment Movement Summit conference took place in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in September 1961. It had 120 members in the year 2018 which comprises 53 countries from Africa, 39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean, and 2 from Europe. So, in total there are 17 countries and 10 international organizations that are Observers at the Non-Aligned Movement.
The reason which leads to the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement is: -
The countries which were underdeveloped felt a need to be a part of it and most of it was from Asia and Africa as they felt the need to join efforts for the common defense of interest
The fall out of the colonial empire led to the Non-Alignment Movement.
After the defeat was faced in World War II it was a way to create and strengthen the socialist block.
The formation of two military blocks and the emergence of the bipolar world.

Note: The reason why it was made and is working efficiently is that it involved a global dimension and wanted to defend international peace and security which would help them by solving disputes through peaceful ways.
