The voice was familiar but I could not recognize the face, and so I tried to recall where I’d heard this voice before. He clicked his fingers and said, ‘Hello?’ as I blinked and realized he was waiting for an answer. Oh right, he had asked me if the change of fifty on the pathway was mine. I shook my head.

‘Oh, alright. I think I will just have to submit it at the police station, Aaah.’ Aaah. I’d definitely heard him somewhere. And then I remembered! He was my call-pall! But why didn’t he recognize me?
Being and making pen pals was getting old, so our school had decided to make call-palls. It was supposed to help the students to open up and share their worries with a stranger, so in a way, it was cathartic.

‘Wait!’ I called out. He turned around and looked confused. Ah, so he was wondering where he had heard me now, too.
‘Don’t you remember me, Michael?’
He looked even more confused than before. Wow, he was slower than I thought.
‘I’m sorry, who?’ What? So how does he not remember his name either?
‘You’re Michael. I’m Katherine. Your call-pall. My my, I never thought you’d be so good looking in real’. At this, he blushed.
‘I’m sorry, but I’m not Michael. My name is Lee.’

Oh no. Did I just compliment a random stranger thinking he was my friendly call-pall from school? It was my turn to blush now.

‘Oh! I am so sorry, Lee. I really thought you were him. Wow, I guess there are sound doppelgangers too because I swear you sound exactly like Michael’. There. That ought to help this embarrassing situation.
‘I believe you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I may be late for my convocation. It was great meeting you!’ he said.
‘Certainly. Goodbye, Mr Lee’.
And so, that was the day I got to know that sound doppelgangers exist too.
