Amritsar is located in the Amritsar district of the state of Punjab. It is known to be the second populated city in the state of Punjab. The city is surrounded by Chandigarh, New Delhi, Lahore in Pakistan and Wagah Border. Earlier the city was named Ramdaspur named after Guru Ram Das but it changed after the construction of the pool. It is the home to Harmandir Sahib which is well known as the ‘Golden Temple’ and considered as the holy city of Sikhs.

The place is marked as a chief pilgrimage site for Sikhs living in India or anywhere else in the world. The major tourist place of the city is the Golden Temple where people take bath in the Sarovar, eat ‘lunger’ which is the food prepared by the Sikh community who work for their own divine satisfaction towards God and help the needy and the poor outside the temple.

Another major tourist site to visit near the city is Jallianwala Bagh which is around 1 km from the temple. It is a significant place to remember where thousands of Indians were killed by the Britishers on the order given by Reginald Edward Harry Dyer in the year 1919 on 13th April, which is the birth anniversary of Khalsa celebrated as Vaisakhi Day by the Sikhs.

Guru Ram Das invited people from all over the country including merchants and artisans to make the city a center of attraction and made it successful. Gradually, it became a new center for trade and business and flourished as one of the important places to visit in Punjab.
