Complete answer: The city of Lothal was discovered in 1954, as it was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India from February 13 1995to 19 May 1960. Lothal was one of the ancient cities of Indus Valley Civilization. The city is located between the Bhogavo river and Sabarmati rivers in Gujarat near the Gulf of Khambhat. The town planning of Lothal was precise and mathematically planned. The discovery of toilets and lota-like jars shows the emphasis on cleanliness. The city had a grid pattern with proper streets and drainage systems reflecting the finest example of urban civic planning.
The city of Lothal was divided into two parts- the upper town and the lower town and the city is believed to be a vital and thriving trade centre in ancient times as a few Lothal seals suggest, the city pioneered with its trade of valuable ornaments, beads and gems in areas as far as modern-day Iraq, Iran and Bahrain. Their bead-makers and their techniques were highly skilled as the carnelian beads that have been discovered withstood the rungs of time.

Note: Lothal literally means “ the mound of dead”, it is a combination of words “Loth” and “sthal” from the Gujarati language. The city of “ Mohenjo Daro” means the same in the Sindhi language.
