Hint: Stilt roots are mostly adventitious roots also, aerial as they grow downward from the main stem. Their nodes are basal and obliquely downward which attach firmly to the soil. Stilt roots are basically supporting roots which provide anchorage to the tree or plant to stand strong in the ground. Such plants are grown on ponds, banks of rivers etc.
Complete answer-
Roots are an important feature and organ in a vascular plant. Root function includes not only providing anchorage to plants but also allowing plants to grow taller and stronger. Roots along with water provide nutrients too. All roots are not under the ground, some are above, aerial and dense.
Root morphology and structure- there are four zones in which roots are divided. The root cap, the apical meristem and the elongation zone and the hair. The root cap of new roots helps in penetration. Apical meristem producing the new root cells which elongate and turn into root hairs for the absorption of nutrients and water. Apart from that, root hair is the source of homage for the micro-organisms which perform symbiotic relationships in association with plants.
The root growth is from apical meristem also, known as primary growth and secondary growth consists of growth in diameter, a component of woody plant tissues. plants showing stilt roots are- Maize, red mangrove, sugarcane.
Note:
Arboreal palms have stilt root modifications in which they can adapt to abiotic conditions in tropical rainforests. Stilt roots propose a vertical growth and also, they provide mechanical stability to plants. Stilt roots are modifications of adventitious roots. Growing from basal nodes and also branched structures for the purposes they serve.
