The term "democracy" refers to government by the people. The term refers to various types of government in which citizens can participate in decisions that affect how their community is administered. In modern times, there are several ways to accomplish this:
- People gather to discuss new laws and adjustments to current ones. This is referred to as direct democracy.
- People choose their leaders. These leaders make the law-making decisions. This is what is known as representative democracy. Election is the term for the process of choosing. Elections are held on a regular basis or when an officeholder dies.
- People can sometimes propose new laws or adjustments to current ones. Typically, this is accomplished through a referendum, which requires a particular number of participants.
- People who make decisions are chosen at random, more or less. This is common when selecting a jury for a trial, for example. Sortition or allocation is the name for this procedure. In a trial, the jury will have to decide whether or not the defendant is guilty. In Europe, jury trials are reserved for heinous crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and arson.

Note: A democracy is the polar opposite of a dictatorship, which is a form of government in which power is concentrated in the hands of a single person who dominates the country, lacks political pluralism, and citizens have little or no engagement in local politics.
