Hellen Keller, who was blind and deaf, learned through finger movement and touching. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She spoke to lip movement. In college, she spelled whatever was spoken on her palm to remember what she learned in lectures. A political author, Keller was well-traveled and outspoken in her convictions. On January 22, 1916, Keller traveled to a small town in Wisconsin to deliver a lecture at the Mabel Tainter Memorial Building. She came out to be a very bright student. She suffered a series of strokes in 1961 and spent the last years of her home. She devoted much of her later life to raising funds for the American Foundation for the Blind.
