Hellen Keller, who was blind and deaf, learned through finger movement and touching. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She spoke to lip movement. In college, she spelled whatever was spoken on her palm to remember what she learned in lectures. A political author, Keller was well-traveled and outspoken in her convictions. On January 22, 1916, Keller traveled to a small town in Wisconsin to deliver a lecture at the Mabel Tainter Memorial Building. She came out to be a very bright student. She suffered a series of strokes in 1961 and spent the last years of her home. She devoted much of her later life to raising funds for the American Foundation for the Blind. She died in her sleep on June 1, 1968, at her home. Arcan Ridge, located in Easton, Connecticut, a few weeks short of her eighty-eighth birthday. A service was held in her honor at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., her body was cremated and her ashes were placed there next to her constant companions.
