Hint: The term thermal pollution is used to indicate the destructive effect of heated effluent discharge by various power plants. The most common cause of this is the use of water coolant by industrial manufacturers and power plants.

Complete answer:
which results in the change in the ambient temperature of the water. It denotes the reduction in the quality and deterioration of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem.
Sources of thermal pollution-
- Nuclear power plant.
- Industrial effluent
- Domestic sewage
- Thermal power plant
- Hydroelectric power plant.
The discharged effluent from the above- mentioned sources has a higher temperature than the water body which results in the reduction of the oxygen concentration from the water causing its deterioration.
Harmful effects-
- Reduction in dissolved oxygen due to an increase in the temperature of the water.
- The gradual decrease in density, viscosity, and solubility of gases in water increases the setting up of suspended particles which affect the food supplies of aquatic organisms
- Increase in the toxicity of the water due to the increase in temperature.
- Disruption in the physiology of the organism leading to massive deaths.

Note:
Preventive measures:
- Heated water should be treated before discharging g in the water bodies.
- Cooling ponds and towers should be installed.
- Industrial treated water should be used for domestic purposes.
- An artificial lake can be built for the cooling of the water.
